The legislation known as H.R. 34 would
not impact the daily operations of the
Navy or Marine Corps. It would have no effect on how the
Department operates or performs its duties.
H.R.
34 simply would codify what has been a practice for the past 230 years: the
United States Navy and Marine Corps work side by side as equal partners in
protecting our freedoms.
It
would grant the Marine Corps equality with the other branches. Unlike
the Air Force, which completely separated its operations from the Army in
September of 1947, the Marine Corps is not attempting to break away as a separate
military department. The Marines have a tradition of fighting alongside
the men and women of the Navy. The Corps is seeking recognition that it is
an equal member in the Pentagon.
Some
have taken the position that this change will be an affront to tradition.
However, as much as we honor the past, time moves forward and demands that
we adapt. If tradition was the final word we would still have the Department
of War and the Air Force would still be known as tœhe Arm Air Corps. The
time has come to create a new tradition of equal respect for the men and women
of the United States Marine Corps.
Your support for the legislation will:
It
will:
Show the men and women of the Marine Corps
and their families that they are equal in value in the defense of the U.S.;
Show past and current
Marines that their lives are just as important
as the other members of the Armed Forces;
Show to the families
of those Marines who have made the
ultimate sacrifice that their loved ones will always be remembered.
